For the past 20 years I have worked in the local government industry. An interesting beast that those outside the industry struggle to understand. Often those in the industry share this struggle. In recent years it has become apparent to me – in working with leaders and followers in the industry – that a key struggle and frustration is the ability for decision makers (leaders) to make, own and hold to their decisions.
I am not talking about bull headed resistance to change or admitting a wrong decision. I am talking about the pattern of behaviour which sees decisions and/or commitments made which are then not retained. Often the excuse is ‘busyness’. While this has a degree of validity I believe if we want to take followers on a journey with us, they need to trust us. Trust does not come without integrity.
In decision making what does this look like? Simply taking the time to understand an issue, seek advice in decision making and then remember the process, the rationale and the outcome. Then follow through on any actions required.
