As leaders we do not know at any given moment the impact we are having – be it negative or positive.  This can be an overwhelming consideration that can cause extreme frustration or perfectionist tendencies. How doe we walk the line and get the balance right when we are  in fact as imperfect as anyone else?

Importantly we need to realize that we are in fact imperfect. This gives us a perspective on others that disallows a false sense of self-importance.  I admire leaders whose behaviour towards every single person they encounter is respectful and kind.  This shows a commitment to the reality that nobody is ‘too small’ to be considered important enough to receive their time and commitment. This type of leadership behaviour is strongly associated with the servant style of leadership and is intensely impactful especially when the person exemplifying the behaviour does so ‘when the cameras are off’.

A personal mantra that resonates for me is “honour whomever and whatever presents in each moment”.  This mantra reminds me of my commitment to ethical and respectful behaviours at all times, in all interactions especially when the day goes pear shaped.  And let’s be honest, it seems every day has a degree of the pear in it these days!

If you have read these few paragraphs and are thinking, there is nothing new here for you to learn as a leader I challenge you to consider it is not about whether you have heard this message before…it is about what you have done since you last heard it.  How has this message impacted your leadership behaviours and interactions? Taking information in is simply gaining knowledge.  Internalizing and applying information is wisdom.  And wisdom is a true trait of an authentic leader.
